Let’s Talk Book Bans.
Yesterday I hosted a live event with New York Times bestselling author Julia Scheeres and Amanda Charles, a librarian from the LA Public Library, about book bans—why they’re happening, and what’s at stake.
One thing Amanda said stayed with me:
"Books serve as mirrors, windows and doorways."
--> A mirror reflects our own experiences—so we feel seen.
--> A window offers new perspectives—so we build empathy.
--> A door invites us into new worlds—so we imagine what’s possible.
Removing books from shelves gives the illusion of control. But what it really does is cut off access. And memoirs, ironically, are often at the top of banned books lists. True stories pulled from shelves because someone decided they shouldn’t be told.
The most dangerous stories are the true ones.
